Accelerated Resolution Therapy Nashville

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a type of mind-body therapy that back-and-forth eye movements*, somatic mindfulness (noticing your body’s sensations), and guided imagery, to replace distressing images and sensations with positive ones of your choice.

ART works directly to rewire the way your brain and body hold onto distressing memories and images so that they no longer trigger intense physical and emotional reactions.

I like to call ART a “choose your own adventure” therapy because it’s scripted and highly structured, but there’s also lots of room for creativity and for your inner wisdom to inform your healing path. You’re in control of the process and I (as your therapist) am a helpful guide.

Although traumatic or distressing experiences can be painful to visualize, ART’s structure and my calming, confident presence will help you to move through the pain and toward the positive changes you want to make.

ART sessions are often calming and even joyful for both of us, especially toward the end. (That’s where the sparkly magic tends to happen!)

Who is ART for?

ART is evidence-based for treating PTSD, depression, stress and personal resilience.

ART has also been classified as a promising therapy for symptoms of phobias, anxiety, OCD, sleep issues, and general functioning and well-being.

In my practice, I’ve found ART to be very helpful for folks healing from traumatic and distressing experiences, anxiety, people-pleasing, negative core beliefs, changing habits, creativity, confidence and positive expansion

Folks who feel constrained by structure may prefer Brainspotting, and folks who struggle with dissociation or who want more distance from the distress while processing may prefer Flash. (I offer both as well.)

  • 2-4 ART sessions in one week (1.5-2 hours each, $155 per hour)

  • 30-50-minute follow-up session ($100-155)

Total typical hours = 4.5-10 hours

Total typical investment = $720-$1550

As an adjunct to your talk therapy with another therapist

A release of information with your primary/talk therapist is required

The first session is 1.5-2 hours; subsequent sessions can be 50-minutes when appropriate

I do NOT offer one-off ART sessions except as an adjunct therapy or for former clients of mine.

FAQs

  • Each issue typically takes 1-5 sessions to resolve. Ongoing issues, including complex trauma, may require more sessions as each layer is processed.

  • I wish it was! However, this is highly unlikely and is not supported by the current research base. The current research suggests that 1-5 sessions (average 3) are needed per traumatic memory/event. Complex trauma involves many events and memories.

  • No, I require people to have an intake/preparation session before beginning ART. If you’d like to combine them into one long session, that’s an option.

  • Yes! I let clients choose if they’d like to use eye movements or tactile bilateral stimulation.

Tactile BLS can take the form of alternating tapping on your own knees or collar bones, or using a pair of “tappers” that you hold in either hand while they vibrate back and forth.

  • No. ART and EMDR both use eye movements, but have many differences. For example, ART is more structured with directive guided imagery, whereas EMDR uses free association. You can read more about the differences here.

  • In ART, you won’t forget the facts of what happened, you’ll just lose the distressing images and sensations. You may lose your hypervigilence, but not your vigilence (you ability to keep yourself safe).
